Tivat Salina has become a Ramsar nature reserve

Long, hard road to a happy end: For six years EuroNatur partner CZIP has been working tirelessly to see Tivat Salina in Montenegro protected as a wetland of international significance. With success! Last Wednesday the Montenegrin government officially declared this ecological jewel a Ramsar Nature Reserve.

In cooperation with EuroNatur CZIP carried out detailed studies of plant and animal life in the area and was able to prove that it was habitat to species as rare as the Albanian water frog or the purple flowering limonium, otherwise known as sea lavender. A further argument is that the salt marshes offer an important resting place for migrating birds such as the Osprey, the Eurasian Curlew and the Black-tailed Godwit.

But like so many other wetlands along the Adriatic Flyway this oasis for migrating birds is also threatened: there is ever increasing pressure from the tourist industry to build on the land and use it to expand tourism. Another particularly burning issue is poaching. Together with CZIP EuroNatur is committed in the coming years to stepping up the campaign for the permanent protection of this precious natural landscape.
