The Dalmatian pelicans of Lake Skadar National Park are providing further good news: Already 48 pelicans that hatched this year are now swimming on Lake Skadar. That’s the highest number for 37 years. It was in 1977 that a comparable breeding success was observed for the last time.
One important factor for this positive development are breeding platforms that were mounted in the National Park before this year’s breeding season started. Already in April the number of chicks was unusually high (we reported). The breeding platforms form part of a package of measures to protect the animals developed by EuroNatur – thanks to the support by Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) – in cooperation with its partners Noé Conservation, Tour du Valat, The Association for Protection of Aquatic Wildlife in Albania (APAWA), Natural History Museum of Montenegro, Center for Protection and Research of Birds (CZIP), and the Lake Skadar National Park administration.
