Spain: Bear trapped in a snare

Sad news from Spain: On August 26th, 2012, a brown bear fell victim to a snare in Asturias and was injured so badly that it died the same day.

“Every single dead bear is a bitter loss for the already small population in the Cantabrian Mountains. Particularly in Asturias the snares are a big problem”, says EuroNatur CEO Gabriel Schwaderer. Usually the poachers use snares to trap wild boar. But time and again brown bears get entangled and die in agony. The trappers take no great risk, because it is difficult to convict the offenders. All the more it is essential to find and remove the traps in time. In cooperation with Spanish conservation NGO Fapas EuroNatur is intensively campaigning to
further curb poaching in the Cantabrian Mountains.
