A few days ago a brown bear was found dead in the Cantabrian mountains in the North Spanish municipality of Quiros. EuroNatur’s partner, Fapas, suspects that the male bear was a victim of poachers.
Experts from the Faculty for Veterinarian Medicine at the University of León are currently examining the body. Fapas is requesting results from all necessary analyses such as toxicology tests amongst others, so that the exact cause of death can be declared. Spanish nature conservationists are criticising the fact that the authorities have often hastily discovered a natural animal death in earlier cases.
Thanks to the success of the longstanding work of Euronatur and Fapas, illegal hunting is strongly restricted, at least in the West of the Cantabrian Mountains. Yet in the municipality of Quiros, poaching is still a burning issue. This is fatal for Spain’s last bears. The death of each individual bear means a bitter loss for an endangered population that grows ever smaller.
