It is with deep sadness that we bid farewell to Dr. Eugeniusz Nowack, an outstanding nature conservationist and long-time friend of the EuroNatur foundation, for who he served on the Board of Trustees for many years. Eugeniusz Nowack passed away in December 2024 at the age of 91.
Dr. Eugeniusz Nowack was a driving force in nature conservation, particularly in the context of cross-border cooperation between the German and Polish sides. He not only promoted nature conservation, but also contributed to an international understanding between two nations with a difficult common past.
As founding member and chairman of the Polish nature conservation organisation “Zielona Przyszłość“ Nowack campaigned for the preservation of natural habitats and the promotion of biological diversity. Particularly noteworthy are the projects he initiated to protect bats in the border area between Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany, as well as his commitment to the former EuroNatur project region in the Narew National Park in north-east Poland.
“Eugen Nowack was not only an ardent nature conservationist but also a gifted communicator who knew how to get people excited for nature conversation and motivate them to take action“, says EuroNatur Executive director Gabriel Schwaderer. “His work and his vision will continue to live in the projects and initiatives that he initiated.“
